No more Change Artist days

I’m kicked in the gut. My editor at the Post just wrote an obit … for my series. No, amend that: The Internet and market forces, leading to a 50-percent drop in Post earnings last quarter, led to budget cuts at the Express, which led to the likely end of this series and many other freelance pieces. The editor says she hopes this isn’t permanent, that she might be able to bring us back next year, but I’m not holding out hope.

It’s been a good run – 57 profiles, almost five years, with subjects, schools, regions, demographics, and fields of study as diverse as I could make them. Two I interviewed by email in foreign countries. Two I’ve been out with socially. At least one has changed fields again, somewhat, since I wrote about him. We’re going out on a high note, on the cover, with a lively subject and a terrific set of photos by Lloyd Wolf.

It’s been a good run. I just wish I didn’t have to say that in the past tense.
